Fearless bond
Tenerife - 2019
We started off with no plan really, I only knew that Lutzen (a Dutch guy who I had met at the surf camp where we were both working) wanted to have photos with his sister who came to Tenerife that day to visit him.
We wanted to go to the beach to take the photos, when suddenly Lutzen remembered this abandoned satellite. When we arrived at the satellite, I instantly felt so inspired. The wind through these shiny materials that were falling apart, made an outer worldly sound, as if it was coming from an UFO. There was a rawness to it that (now looking back) I think inspired me to let go of certain believes of how the photos should be and just see what would happen.
It had a similar effect on Lutzen, who is a natural free spirit who feels no shame in walking around naked. The place became our playground, with my eye on the different shapes and colours, Lutzen and Stiene (his sister) began to see it as their kingdom, a way that a child can look at the world: pure, full of innocence, possibilities and joy.
These were the photos that came out. For me they represent a fearless bond between a brother and sister, not limited by the norms of society. And a fearless, childlike joy, that I hope many adults will keep on feeling too from time to time.
